Letter Campaign
ACJCE kicked off its letter campaign with the aim to apprise the Chinese actors—including the banks, companies, government departments and embassy—of the social and environmental problems induced by coal power projects being funded by them in Thar region of Pakistan. The letters are written to all those relevant actors to remind them of the international commitments of the Chinese government to reduce its carbon footprint and persuade them to invest in renewable energy sector of Pakistan.
Through the letter, which was sent in both Chinese and English languages, the members of ACJCE drew the Bank of China’s (BoC) attention towards coal-induced water woes in Thar desert of Pakistan and called for the solution of the problem through the “Green Development Guidelines for Foreign Investment and Cooperation” recently introduced by the government of China
The ACJCE members wrote a letter to Mitsubishi Corporation on the socio-environmental implications of the Tabeer LNG project. From the platform of ACJCE, around 25 civil society organizations and coalitions endorsed this letter to draw the organization’s attention.
ACJCE wrote a second letter to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to voice their concerns over the recent parleys between the global lender and the Government of Pakistan (GOP) regarding energy policy and fiscal reforms under the Fund’s $6 billion Extended Finance Facility (EFF) program for the GOP.
The ACJCE members wrote a second letter to Mitsubishi Corporation regarding the human and environmental impact of the corporation’s decision to finance the construction of another LNG terminal in Pakistan.
In a letter to the World Bank, the Alliance for Climate Justice and Clean Energy urged the bank to conduct a thorough analysis of climate change while preparing ‘Country Climate and Development Report (CCDR) for Pakistan.’
Parliamentary Caucus
A caucus is an issue-based cross-party platform which brings together parliamentarians who have similar opinions on an issue of extreme national importance, on which their party does not have a strict ideology/stance. Pakistan is under tremendous pressure from its bilateral western donors and multilateral forums such as United Nations, International Monetary Fund and World Bank to leapfrog from its existing smoke-stacked energy production to clean and renewable energy sources. Therefore, there is an urgent need for instituting a parliamentary caucus to ensure climate protection and transition to clean energy sources, while highlighting the plight of communities and regions that are bearing the climatic brunt of the existing energy policies.
This caucus aims to improve policy coordination on the issues of renewable energy and climate justice through committee-style hearings in which policymakers are invited to brief the parliamentarians and answer their questions. It also aims to promote a cross-party critique and discussion within the parliament over the existing policies on renewable energy and climate justice and improve the existing legislation or devise a new one, if required, on renewable energy and climate justice.
